Cozy Up to Bone Broth Soup for a Speedy Recovery! Shannon Page, HHP,CPT, PR



I just got finished with one of the worst flu's I have had in years. Being under the weather is never enjoyable and I knew I had to bounce back quick for my family and clients. My immediate go-to is make a pot of – homemade bone broth soup. 🍲 🥕💪


The rich, nourishing broth is not only delicious but packed with essential nutrients that can help support your body during a time of healing. It's like a superhero elixir designed to boost your immune system and replenish your energy. Plus the collagen in the broth can work wonders for a scratchy throat and help rebuild your strength.


SHANNONS BONE BROTH RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 pounds of beef, chicken, or turkey bones (such as marrow or knuckle bones)

  • 1 onion, roughly chopped

  • 2 carrots, roughly chopped

  • 3 celery stalks, roughly chopped

  • 4 cloves of garlic, smashed

  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (helps extract minerals from the bones)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Optional: herbs like thyme, rosemary, or bay leaves for added flavor

  • Water (enough to cover the bones in the pot)


Instructions:

  1. Roast the Bones (Optional): Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the bones on a baking sheet and roast for about 30-40 minutes until they are golden brown. This step enhances the flavor of the broth.

  2. Prepare Vegetables: While the bones are roasting, chop the vegetables.

  3. Start the Broth: In a large stockpot, combine the roasted bones (or raw if you skip the roasting step), chopped vegetables, garlic, and herbs.

  4. Add Vinegar and Water: Pour in the apple cider vinegar and add enough water to cover the bones.

  5. Bring to a Boil, Then Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Skim off any foam or impurities that rise to the surface.

  6. Simmer for Hours: Allow the broth to simmer on low heat for at least 4-6 hours for poultry bones or 12-24 hours for beef or lamb bones. The longer you simmer, the richer the flavor and nutrient content.

  7. Strain the Broth: Once the broth has simmered to your satisfaction, strain it through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove solids. Discard the bones and vegetables.

  8. Season to Taste: Season the broth with salt and pepper to taste.

  9. Cool and Store: Allow the broth to cool before storing it in containers. You can refrigerate it for up to a week or freeze it for longer storage.

Bone broth isn't exclusive to the sick – some of my clients incorporate it into their morning routine as a coffee alternative. Another convenient option is preparing a large batch, storing it in glass mason jars, and freezing it. When the need for a therapeutic meal arises, just pop the lid off, microwave the jar, and enjoy a quick healing sips.
