Decompressing and Restoring Balance to Your Teen. Shannon Page, HHP,CPT, PR

Today's teenagers face numerous stressors or energy depleters, not only draining them but also swiftly disrupting their balance, leading to fatigue, digestive issues, aches, pains, anger, and mental health concerns.
As a parent to two teenage sons and a young adult daughter, I directly witness the challenges they navigate. Effectively managing this phase is crucial, as our parental role involves equipping them with tools for self-healing from stressors once they embark on their own journey beyond the nest.
So let's talk about stress. Stress is dangerous. We jump to act when we hear the word "cancer", but "stress" gets a luke warm reception–yet each word causes bodily harm and can be fatal. As a parent when our child says they are "stressed", or exhibit the signs and symptoms of stress we should pause and take the time to address it seriously.
SIGN OF TEEN STRESS
Negative changes in academic performance
Withdrawal from activities or friends
Mood swings
Self-harming behavior
Excessive drinking or substance use
Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
TAKING ACTION 1. SEE YOUR TEENS HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONER:
I always recommend that teens see their primary care physician for yearly routine check-ups because physicals today always come with a stress and mental health assessment. Practitioner's can recommend medication and counseling if stress has developed into anxiety or depression. It is important to note monitor your child very closely if they start mental health medication because it can make depression and anxiety worse temporarily. There are also blood tests that can be done to determine which medication works safest with your teens metabolism. Medication does help restore chemical brain imbalances, but to be effective it has to be taken every day.
2. FIND A GOOD TEEN-FOCUSED THERAPIST
Research shows that talk therapy and medication provide the best results when compared to medication alone. Talking to a licensed therapist allows your teen to be in a safe, judgement-free, private space to talk about their problems and points of stress. I find younger therapists tend to connect better with teenagers due to the generational similarities. A therapist will also provide self-help strategies to manage their stress outside the office. As parents we can not fix everything, so giving the gift of therapy is wonderful way to help your teen. Most insurances support therapy, so use it!
3. HOLISTIC HEALING, The Mind, Body,Spirit Connection
Sometimes we need more than traditional treatments to get back on track; that’s why I offer a holistic approach to treatment. Holistic treatment can be an effective tool in helping teens to heal from addiction, mental health issues, and behavioral issues. The goal of holistic treatment is to treat the person as a whole instead of just addressing the symptoms.
What we work on in our sessions:
Mindfulness and relaxation techniques, such as yoga and meditation, can help teens to become more aware of their emotions and manage them better.
Living a healthy lifestyle through nutrition, exercise, and getting enough sleep will provide the physical foundation for healing.
Spiritual practices, such as prayer or guided visualizations, can provide a sense of connection and comfort during times of distress.
Sound Therapy is one of the fantastic ways to help unblock unpleasant experiences.
By utilizing these holistic approaches in combination with traditional treatments, teens can experience the healing they need, learn to effectively manage their symptoms and triggers, and improve their quality of life by addressing all facets of their mental, physical, and behavioral health.
Schedule just one Healing Holistic session and watch your teen leave with a smile and a sense of hope and revitalization.
